The power to overcome lies within you

No matter how dark, long or lost the night may seem, there's always a brighter day that lies ahead of you. All you need to do is to hold on to yourself, your hope, your courage, and [run] through the [darkness] of hardship and trouble. Never give up on yourself, no matter what happens.

The power to overcome lies within you. Make the best of every moment and involve yourself in it totally. Let go what you cannot change and work on what you can.

Keep it simple and focus your strength completely in doing all that you can to change things.

Nothing is impossible for a man who never stops trying and giving his best.

  1. Beautiful! Reminds me of that quote you sent me off to my first 100 with!

    1. It really hits home for us 100 mile junkies but could be applied to any difficult thing in our lives. Nothing is tougher than getting through the night but once the sun rises you are filled with energy and hope. If not...at least it brings a smile to your face!

It kind of resonates with me too because I am and have always been one to worry about what I can control and let go of everything else.

  2. Seeing the sunrise after a rough night is the reason more than any other I'm craving another 100 right now. Guess it will have to wait a little bit, but it's kind of magical that moment when the sun appears finally over the horizon.

Sometimes I think it would be good for you to let go of ALL of it just once. To just show up and race something without a moment's planning. Might be the best race of your life. Might not. But it would be a new way to experience it all - letting go of control. I've thought about leaving the Garmin at home and just running without all the charts, numbers, too. Might be very freeing!

    1. Ya, if these silly things weren't so darn expensive I would do that. Maybe I should just map one out and do it, that way I would feel bad about the cost.

  3. P.S. Looks like Antelope Island was a great chance to try letting things go a bit since your Garmin decided to be DOA the morning of! Yay for kicking ass without it! :D I need to try that one of these days.

    1. Yes, it was a good reminder that I don't need it to be successful. Success is achieved in training not on race day IMO. You should try it...or even just start it and put it in your pack so you can see how you did afterward.

  4. Maybe I'll do Zeitgeist (aka my Birthday Run) without one. It would be weird. I haven't done a race without one before!!!! I might feel naked, but it might be wonderful to just run without staring down a 1,000 times at the darn thing, too!

    1. Try it on a greenbelt run. When I first started sans-garmin...I would run between the markers on the greenbelt and lap my normal watch when I hit a mile. It gave me the feedback to help hone in my pace and I only had to think about it once per mile. Write the splits from your last Zeitgeist down and use it as a gauge as you go along...

  5. All of that would kind of be missing the point, silly! The point of running sans Garmin is to run free (less thinking, more running!!!) I think I'll let my body tune into the pace and see how it goes. Might surprise myself. My PR at Zeitgeist is 1:57. Pretty confident I can beat that by a few min. Would love a 1:49 on that course! That said, I do always admire how you are so steady with your pacing - like a metronome, I've said. If I find I'm no good at pacing myself without a Garmin, I may have to try that sometime..
